A bookstore that prefers the long conversation
On a calm stretch of Memorandumului, we keep a room of new and carefully chosen second-hand titles for readers who still want paper, quiet, and a bookseller who remembers what you liked last month.
Misery Worming Books opened as a response to the kind of shopping that flattens every shelf into the same algorithm. We buy what we can stand behind: literary fiction from Romania and abroad, essays that argue carefully, poetry that earns its white space, and practical books for people who cook, mend, walk, or teach. The stock turns slowly on purpose. When a title leaves, another arrives with a short note on the card behind it — not a review lecture, just a reason it belongs here.
Cluj-Napoca reads in many languages. You will find English and Romanian side by side, with a smaller corner for Hungarian and French when the right editions appear. Students drop in between lectures; translators trade tips over the poetry wall; visitors ask for something set in Transylvania that is not a tourist brochure. We answer with honesty. If we do not have it, we say so, and we often know where else in the city to look.
The shop is small enough that you can see the whole floor from the door, and large enough that nobody watches you choose. There are two chairs by the front window and a low table for stacks you are still deciding on. We do not play loud playlists. We do not push gift wrapping as a spectacle. We wrap carefully when asked, and we leave you alone when that is kinder.
