Misery Worming BooksCluj-Napoca, Romania

Misery Worming Books Independent bookstore · Strada Memorandumului 12, Cluj-Napoca — shelves arranged for lingering, not rushing.

A bookstore that prefers the long conversation

On a calm stretch of Memorandumului, we keep a room of new and carefully chosen second-hand titles for readers who still want paper, quiet, and a bookseller who remembers what you liked last month.

Misery Worming Books opened as a response to the kind of shopping that flattens every shelf into the same algorithm. We buy what we can stand behind: literary fiction from Romania and abroad, essays that argue carefully, poetry that earns its white space, and practical books for people who cook, mend, walk, or teach. The stock turns slowly on purpose. When a title leaves, another arrives with a short note on the card behind it — not a review lecture, just a reason it belongs here.

Cluj-Napoca reads in many languages. You will find English and Romanian side by side, with a smaller corner for Hungarian and French when the right editions appear. Students drop in between lectures; translators trade tips over the poetry wall; visitors ask for something set in Transylvania that is not a tourist brochure. We answer with honesty. If we do not have it, we say so, and we often know where else in the city to look.

The shop is small enough that you can see the whole floor from the door, and large enough that nobody watches you choose. There are two chairs by the front window and a low table for stacks you are still deciding on. We do not play loud playlists. We do not push gift wrapping as a spectacle. We wrap carefully when asked, and we leave you alone when that is kinder.

What the shop is for

  1. Curated shelves

Sections grow from reading, not from warehouse quotas. Fiction, essays, poetry, local interest, and a rotating “staff shelf” of books we have finished ourselves.

  2. Orders & holds

Ask us to hold a title or source an edition. We confirm by phone or email when it arrives at Strada Memorandumului 12.

  3. Evenings in the shop

Occasional readings, translator talks, and quiet launch nights. Seats are limited; details live on the events page.

  4. Thoughtful gifts

Tell us who you are buying for — age, language, temper — and we will pull three options, not a dozen.

Window light, late afternoon Dust motes over the new arrivals table; spines catching the last gold before street lamps switch on.
Handwritten shelf tickets Short notes in pencil: who recommended the book, which language edition, why it stayed in stock.
Poetry wall, north corner Thin volumes stood upright so titles can be read without pulling every spine forward.
Closing hour hush The till drawer softens; someone finishes a chapter in the window chair before we lock the door.
